  • Journalism degrees are no longer worth the paper on which they're written.

    Danyelle RobinsonDanyelle RobinsonTháng trước
    • @Kathy Young At university, print journalist are still classically trained. The demise of the Fairness Doctrine which occured in concert with the advent of Internet news, bloggers and social media changed the industry. It's not as much about what journalists are taught in school bot more about it's practical applications in the real world. I was taught an ideology based on integrity and credibility. The past four years have proven that these values are both in short supply and are less relevant to American voters. Add to this the fact that journalist of integrity have been labeled enemies of the state and violence against them has increased. All while barely making a living wage. Then you can begin to understand why the degree has become worthless.

      Danyelle RobinsonDanyelle Robinson12 ngày trước
    • Amen. That’s because they quit teaching journalism and started teaching propaganda 101.

    • I got an English degree with a math minor, taught school (math, as there are far too many English majors for the number of teaching jobs), drove an 18-wheeler for 10 years, worked in a prison. The English degree never got me a job. Explore your other interests. But avoid arts, photography, music, sociology, and history. Those degrees will not get you a decent paying job either, if even a job at all. Nurse, physician assistant, EMT, programmer, all have many openings. Get a list of jobs with many vacancies. Best wishes.

    • @canela mi Ah, okay, well thank you! I still don't know what to do, but you've been very informative. It's so sad that only STEM majors can really have a guaranteed career path, though.

      Athena Cruz-AlbrechtAthena Cruz-AlbrechtTháng trước
    • @Athena Cruz-Albrecht humanities...do you want to pay your bills or pursue your desires?? You want to pay bills, save money and take vacation? Then choose a stable well sought after career. You pursue your passion on the side and if your passion makes money, enough to support you then you go on that path. Don't believe me, google all the people who regret taking the time and money for humanities degree. You're young so this concept is a harsh reality that you may not want to accept. In the end it's up to you to decide.

      canela micanela miTháng trước
    • @canela mi Those are all great majors, but they're all STEM. I don't dislike STEM, nor do I suck at it, but I just don't enjoy it all that much. I love the humanities and want to pursue a humanities major, but I also want to be able to find a job after college (even if it's not super high-paying--just enough to live by and save a little). Honestly I don't really know what to do. Teaching is not my goal in life, so although I am considering it as a career, I don't want to focus my entire major on Education as opposed to English/Linguistics/Literature.

  • In 2008 the country was in a recession. Unfortunately I live in Michigan which managed to upgrade its situation to a full scale depression. Since I had a class a CDL I decided to take a truck driving job. Okay maybe decided is a bit strong. It was the only job available and even that was for a small company headquartered out of state . I was eating dinner at a relatively nice truck stop when a conversation began with another driver. Drivers tend to have a wide range of backgrounds so topics vary widely. The subjects of this encounter were a little bit about the Russian revolution, followed by a long detailed discussion of George Orwell. My excuse for having a background in useless information was that I'm a very fast reader but not very good at choosing material. His excuse was much worse, he actually had a degree in literature. After a while he said something I'll never forget. "A degree in literature is a real truck driver's degree. That's because after you finish you're only qualified for two jobs. Those are teaching literature which doesn't exist or driving a truck. Of course the truck driving part only works if you already knew how to drive a truck before you entered college."

    • Here in Germany, you'd become a grumpy taxi driver; otherwise the story is the same. Yet so many young people choose to study stuff that everybody knows won't ever pay their bills; because there is little chance for failure, unlike for well-paying degrees like computer science or electrical engineering. So we have the most over-educated taxi drivers in the world.

  • My niece majored in Fine Art. The only job she could find was in an Art museum for $8/Hr. Fortunately she had a minor in English, so she found a job as a substitute teacher. Huh? Huh? Think about that! Huh? (JK)

    Lyle AustinLyle Austin2 tháng trước
    • To be fair though, what was she expecting after majoring in _fine art?_ it's not like you pass the course and you become Michelangelo. In fact most of the people that major in fine arts probably aren't even very good artists themselves, and the kinds of available jobs certainly aren't "paint the Sistine chapel" or anything. It's either art appraisal, which requires a keen eye and a good memory, or what she was doing - sit in an art museum for peanuts. Thats why, if students are going to be forced to go through this shitty system, they really need some guidance on what majors to study. Its hard enough to get a decent job with a _useful and relevant degree_ , let alone if all you have is something with little to no real world application and a bunch of debt. Im still paying off debt that I wouldn't have now, if I'd just had like 10min of decent guidance from someone who didn't have their own agenda to try to vicariously live through me. Alas.. this is not the world I know.

    • @trut hurts It is balance. When the Right is out of control it leads to tyranny. When the Left is, it leads to anarchy. The Left employs the tools of Nazism with Antifa mirroring the Brown Shirts and the propaganda through the Fake News. If you are paying attention and in search for the truth, it is obvious. If not, well, it digresses to argument and winning points.
